For 2021, the Tacoma is now available in the new Trail Special Edition model. As a limited-production variation, this new trim is based on the agile SR5 Crew Cab, and it comes with black badging, TRD-inspired wheels with all-terrain tires, a lockable cargo unit, and other upgrades. The Trail Special Edition’s interior also features black upholstery with tan accent stitching. You can equip the Trail Special Edition with either rear- or four-wheel drive.
Under the hood, you’ll find the Tacoma’s lively 4-cylinder engine, while Toyota also offers a robust V6 for even more muscle. You can also handle gear shifting yourself with the six-speed manual transmission or let the six-speed automatic manage the transitions with smooth timing. When the Tacoma is fully equipped for the job, it can tow 6,800 pounds and haul 1,685 pounds. The truck offers a smooth ride, especially in the TRD port and Limited trims, while the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions are built for venturing off the beaten path.
Forward collision warning and various other safety tools come standard, as do convenience features like Amazon Alexa and satellite radio. You can also opt for tech options like the available navigation system, wireless device charging, or blind spot monitoring.
The first Toyota pickup to arrive in North America was a stocky truck known as the Stout. This compact hauler debuted in 1964, and was followed just five years later by the Hi-Lux. While the Hi-Lux was more modern by comparison, Toyota would significantly update their truck offerings in 1995 with the premier of the Tacoma. This fresh arrival delivered impressive capability in a durable, contemporary body.
Toyota updated the pickup’s looks, powertrain, and technology in the years that followed, and the Tacoma handily established itself as a serious competitor in the U.S. truck market. Its sturdy reliability appealed to American drivers, and its price remains refreshingly low even as Toyota continues to enhance its value with new upgrades and fresh features.
